5 Grade 9 Math concepts to master for your exam

Ontario math exams are around the corner and sometimes it can feel like there is so much info to cover that it can be overwhelming to know where to start. At our award-winning Toronto math tutoring centre, we totally get it and that’s why we’ve put together a list of the most important concepts in MPM1D so that you can kickstart your study game with the topics that are sure to be on your exam!

1. Algebraic Equations

Algebra is the foundation for so much of MPM1D! Make sure you have a solid understanding of how to simplify algebraic expressions, solve linear equations, and work with formulas. Remember to brush up on factoring, expanding, and solving equations involving variables. Practice makes progress, so don't shy away from solving plenty of examples.

2. Linear Relations

Linear relations are all about understanding patterns and relationships. Make sure you know how to graph linear equations, calculate the slope of a line, and determine whether lines are parallel or perpendicular. Spend some time mastering the concepts of y-intercepts, slope-intercept form, and point-slope form. Remember, these skills will come in handy throughout your math journey - but especially on your Grade 9 high school math exam!

3. Polynomials

Integers and polynomials are likely what you started your math course with this year. Familiarize yourself with key polynomial concepts like degree, coefficients, and terms. Learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and factor polynomials (some schools don’t actually factor polynomials until Grade 10, so don’t worry about this if you haven’t done it this year)!

4. Geometry

Geometry is one of the units in Grade 9 math. Make sure you familiarize yourself with key formulas like the area of a triangle and square. Check with your teacher to see if your school will allow you to bring a formula sheet in so that you know what you need to memorize and what you don’t. Make sure you’re practicing how to find the area and perimeter of compound shapes, and make sure you know all your angle rules!

5. Data

Data analysis and representation make an appearance in Grade 9 Academic Math! Refresh yourself on strategies to collect, organize, and interpret data using various types of graphs and charts. You'll also want to study measures of central tendency, such as mean, median, and mode, and learn to make inferences based on data sets - you’ve got this!

So, there you have it guys - five of the hottest topics that will show up on your Grade 9 Ontario math exam. Make a list, get organized, tackle some practice problems - you’ve got this!
