5 Things to look for in a math tutor

Since we opened our math and science tutoring studio in Toronto ten years ago, there’s been an influx of tutoring companies entering the tutoring space. Getting one on one support for your child can make a huge difference, and over the years, we’ve learned that not all math tutoring is created equal! After working with thousands of students, we have a pretty good idea of what separates a tutor…from a GREAT tutor. Here are the top five things you should look for in a math or science tutor!

Knowledge of the math curriculum

Being a math pro is one thing - but knowing the math curriculum is another! For example, Ontario has its own specialized math curriculum that sets it apart from other provinces in Canada. It’s important for tutors to have an understanding of how their students’ curriculum works so that have an idea of what’s coming down the pipeline, and where each individual math lesson fits into the bigger picture. Seeing the forest for the trees is so important when teaching math, and can ensure that students get that holistic view that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts!

The ability to personalize their teaching style

The whole point of one on one math tutoring is that you get access to a tutor that knows exactly how your child learns best, and knows how to cater each math lesson to their personal learning style! Versatility is important when teaching math, so look for a tutor who is familiar with different learning styles and knows how to explain concepts in a variety of ways!

A passion for teaching

Think you need an actual certified math teacher to tutor your child in math? Think again! There are many math teachers (I think we’ve all likely had one!) who are GOOD at math…but not so good at TEACHING math! A teaching degree does not make someone a great teacher. Instead, focus on finding a math or science tutor who has a true passion for teaching, instead of simply looking for someone who’s good at math or science or who has a teaching degree. The two are not the same!

An understanding of mental health and anxiety

Students today are more anxious than ever before and math anxiety has officially become a diagnosable condition. Many students struggle with math not because of the concepts, but because they have test anxiety, homework anxiety, or lack confidence. When looking for a tutor, it’s important to find someone who understands what it’s like to feel anxious about school, and who is familiar with strategies to help their students chill out and de-stress when math-panic sets in! A tutor who is familiar with different learning disabilities and IEPs can also be a huge advantage. Look for a tutor who knows a thing or two about mindfulness, mental health, and how to reduce stress!

A positive and encouraging attitude

The most important asset a math tutor can bring to the table is a positive attitude and a knack for instilling confidence in their students. A motivational mindset is essential when tutoring math, and almost every student who needs a math tutor also needs a mega confidence boost! Make sure you look for a tutor who considers themself somewhat of a coach, or even a motivational speaker! A little pep talk can go a long way in boosting marks on that next math test!
